Question of the Week: Jesus or Justice?

Ross Lockhart writes in his article entitled “Peekaboo Jesus” the following statement, “My experience of the Emerging Spirit campaign is that most people shied away from engaging Jesus and opted instead for our other, safer ‘J Word’—Justice.” (Snider, Phil. The Hyphenateds: How Emergence Christianity is Re-Traditioning Mainline Practices. Chalice Press. 2011, page 100)

So my question of the week is, Which do you use more—Jesus or Justice?

  1. The name of Jesus is not very popular in this sight. I was wondering why no one would not answer my question. I counted how many times Jesus was used in 13 articles in Theology Mix. Only six times. Three articles once and one article three times. I am one of the guilty people who did not use the name Jesus. Phil Snider was not totally right, because the word Justice was used less than Jesus. Christ and God were used in most articles. Why are most of us writers, me included, more anxious to justify our stance than engage on what Jesus means in our lives? I know what I will include in my sermon this Sunday.

    1. I could be wrong, but I’m guessing it’s because many don’t agree. One doesn’t need to baptize articles with the word Jesus. I sincerely doubt that most are staying away from using the word Jesus. On the other hand, many who use “Jesus, Jesus” in their prayers and speech are often the worst Christians you can find. Or maybe, we could call ourselves Jesusians 🙂
