Annas was a long-tenured High Priest of the Temple, the father of five more high priests, and also the father-in-law of the High Priest who handed Jesus over to Pilate for crucifixion. Needless to say he was a wildly powerful man who cast a long shadow over the religious and political affairs of Judea in the first century.
