Carol Howell Talks Dementia: Shoe Therapy—SERIOUSLY!

carol-howell-shoe-1.squarespace.comIn an effort to relax and enjoy life a little more, I did that thing I really enjoy doing. SHOE SHOPPING! Really—I love shoes. My husband accuses me of giving Imelda Marcos a run for her money. Supposedly, she owns more than 3,000 pairs. My closet is small, so I can assure you I do not own 3,000 pairs of shoes. At one point I had 43 pairs, but my selection has dwindled as of late and I felt a little Shoe Therapy was in order.

Why do you care if I purchased shoes? Because it is a relaxing and enjoyable thing for me. If you follow my blog, you know I am the caregiver for my mother, Vera, who has mid-stage Alzheimer’s. I also help my husband caregive for his brother, Ernie, who has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from being in Vietnam. I also spend time helping folks across the country find the help they need for their loved ones with dementia. Caregiving is HUGE in my daily life.

I have discovered I am more effective and happier when I take a little time for myself. My recent visit to the shoe store helped take my mind off dementia, Alzheimer’s, activities of daily living, medications, etc., etc. Instead, I thought about purple shoes and why I needed a pair.

I left with my purple shoes, and I left feeling a little less stressed. So think about what helps you relax? Is it a little shoe therapy? Maybe a pedicure for the toes that go in those shoes? Or, do you like sitting on the dock with a fishing pole? Whatever, take some time to de-stress and relax. There is plenty to be done later, but you will be better at it if you relax.

Do I need RED shoes, also????

Hope that gives you Something to Ponder.
