The Art of Redemption Episode 024.1— The Watchmen Series Part 1: The Comedian (Nihilism)

utilitarianism

This week we start a new series based on the graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore and David Gibbons. As we dive into this series we will be looking into 6 characters and the worldviews that they are communicating through this Novel.

This novel is on the New York Times top 100 best novels ever. It has been awarded the Hugo award in 1988, an award for the best science fiction story.

The story and characters in this novel are worth looking into—there are many ways that their worldviews are personified as people that are relatable and almost tangible.

What is the big idea? As we go through this series we will take apart these world views and the characters that portray them and point out the inconsistencies and mishaps that they cannot hold to.

This week we look into the Comedian and his worldview of Nihilism. Nihilism is a the rejection of all religious and moral principles, often in the belief that life is meaningless. We see this life lived out through the character known as the Comedian or Edward Blake. His early murder in the book leads to what seems a series of events that uncovers a plot to destroy a massive portion of mankind. Once this plot is found out by the Comedian he snaps and cannot handle is, therefore in essence not being consistent to his worldview. He also fails to hold to his world view in relationships. If he held to it consistently he would not have wanted a relationship with his superhero daughter. He remains consistent with the Vietnamese woman when he leaves Vietnam after shooting her for cutting his face.

Much like any other false worldview, Nihilism cannot be held to consistently because it falls apart when it comes up against the way we as people were created by God. It goes against God and how he has designed us. Listen in to hear this episode and stay tuned for the rest of the series…
