Joan of Arc was Noah’s Wife: The United States of Biblical Illiteracy

Biblical illiteracy in the United States is growing!

Albert Mohler in his article, “The Scandal of Biblical Illiteracy: It’s Our Problem” states,
“Researchers George Gallup and Jim Castelli put the problem squarely: ‘Americans revere the Bible–but, by and large, they don’t read it. And because they don’t read it, they have become a nation of biblical illiterates.'” I encourage you to read the entire article.

So following up on my post, “Summer Reading: The Bible,” I want to reiterate the importance of biblical literacy in our churches and in our homes. I understand that there are several who attend church who have not had a chance to read their Bible daily. Several have not even read the Bible through even once in their lifetime.

This is not a “Bible-reading shaming” moment! It’s to recognize that if we want to have a strong biblical faith that gets us through life’s toughest challenges and face difficult life questions, then we need to have a solid understanding of what the Bible says about each situation we face. If you haven’t yet, but would like to start a daily Bible reading discipline, now is a good time to do so. By daily Bible reading, I understand there will be days that circumstances will make it difficult to get your reading done. What I’m suggesting is a making a conscious effort to read your Bible—like having your daily cup of coffee or tea, or going to work or school. A regular necessary and/or enjoyable practice!

If you’re looking for a reading plan, I suggest splitting your time into three sections. The first two split between reading the general Old Testament as well as the Psalms, and the third part on the New Testament. My wife splits her reading into four sections: Old Testament, Gospels, rest of the New Testament, and the Psalms.

Or, check out Ligonier Ministries: Bible Reading Plans for 2020. Some will be able to complete reading the Bible in a year, for others it may be longer. Choose whichever plan works best for you. The intention is to read through the Bible in its entirety.

Pray for God’s Holy Spirit to shine and illuminate your path as you in turn seek to be salt and light to those around you.
