I’m a Bitter™-ass old white sombich sitting on his porch with the missus, shaking a cane at absurdities in myself and others. Theologically I’m somewhere around whatever the Fundies are calling liberal these days and clinging to the Cross. It ain’t half bad here. Follow him at @GovPappy.
1. Why did you start a Twitter account?
A. I wanted to troll the worst of the IFB. It was easy, and very much unfruitful, but I wanted a vent for my anger. It’s turned into so much more than that.
2. What has been your favourite Twitter interaction so far?
A. @XianJaneway. Besides solid, funny, pointed, and often painful insights from experience, she’s also a darned good human being and a great friend. The missus and I have met her and her family twice, and love her. Them’s good people.
3. Who is your favourite theologian, past and/or present?
A. CS Lewis for the past. Brother just connects with my mind. For the present day? @LloydLegalist. Sombich has his finger on the pulse of America.
4. Is it easier to be who you really are as an Anon?
A. I suppose so. Having a character helps focus my humor and thoughts in general.
5. What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?
A. I can fit in a smart car.
6. After a stressful day, what’s your favourite way of relaxing?
A. A cup of hot tea and a long book on a cold afternoon. Not many of those in the south.
7. Your worst critic in the church is shopping in the same grocery store you’re at. Do you: look for the nearest exit, put your dark glasses on, run your grocery cart into them, or pretend you didn’t see them?
A. My worst critics shop at Wal-Mart. I don’t shop at dadgum Wal-Mart.
8. Link us to your go-to song of the moment while driving to Sunday worship—you know, the song that you need/like to hear before you arrive at church?
A. These Times by The Normals.
9. Who is the one Anon you would most like to smack? Why?
A. Anyone who’d rather stick up for a non-essential bit of theology than deal with real pain, so, uhh, take your pick. I mean dadgum, fight where the hurt is at.
10. What would you consider the “worst”—Christian book, Christian music, Christian movies? (If you have more than one choice, please feel free to list them.)
A. I can avoid lazy, poorly-done Christian books and movies, but the dadgum music hits you outta nowhere in the middle of worship. One minute you’re in heaven, next you’re standing there with your arms folded as everyone around you is singing some drivel about “sunshine in my dadgum soul.” It ain’t right.
11. Is the church relevant? If yes, what would you consider the best way to reach the unchurched?
A. Yeah it’s relevant, when it’s showing the Gospel in life and word, when it’s a safe place for the hurting, and fighting for the downtrodden.
